The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is beginning work on a new comprehensive plan for Newtown Battlefield State Park and is inviting the public to help shape the park’s future.
State Parks will hold two public meetings on June 25 at the Chemung County Historical Society, located at 415 E. Water Street in Elmira. Sessions will be offered from 2 to 3:30 p.m. and again from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The meetings will also be available virtually through Webex.
According to State Parks officials, both meetings will feature the same presentation and discussion. Attendees will receive an overview of the planning process, learn about the park’s features, explore the site’s Civilian Conservation Corps history, and review the significance of the historic Battle of Newtown. Participants will also have an opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback.
Officials say the comprehensive plan will help guide the future management, preservation and development of the park.
Anyone wishing to attend virtually must register in advance. Registration requests must be submitted by noon on June 24.
State Parks officials said accommodations are available for people with disabilities who need assistance participating in the meetings.
Those unable to attend can watch a recording that will be posted on the State Parks master plans website after the meetings. Written comments on the plan will be accepted through July 16 via email or mail.
Newtown Battlefield State Park commemorates the 1779 Battle of Newtown, a pivotal engagement during the Sullivan-Clinton Campaign of the Revolutionary War. The park is located south of Elmira in Chemung County.
