A Summerhill man faces felony and misdemeanor charges following a domestic incident investigation by the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office.

Norman Dewitt, 29, was arrested on Friday, following a reported disturbance in the Town of Sempronius earlier that morning. Sheriff Brian Schenck reports that deputies originally responded to a residence at approximately 2:50 a.m.

According to authorities, an investigation established probable cause that Dewitt allegedly stole property from a victim and, during a physical altercation, placed his knee on the victim’s throat, obstructing their breathing. Dewitt allegedly fled the scene on a mini-bike before deputies arrived, but was later located hiding inside a garage in the Town of Summerhill.

Upon taking Dewitt into custody, deputies reportedly discovered the victim’s stolen property in his possession. Because Dewitt is currently on probation for a domestic-related offense that occurred within the past five years, he was charged with a felony Aggravated Family Offense.

In total, Dewitt faces charges of Aggravated Family Offense, Criminal Obstruction of Breathing, Petit Larceny, and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Fifth Degree. He was transported to the Cayuga County Jail, where he was arraigned in Centralized Arraignment Part court and booked into the facility.

The charges are accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. Police reports are automatically removed from this site after 90 days.
