A Geneva man has been charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty after authorities say a dog and two cats were found abandoned inside a condemned mobile home in the Town of Canadice.
According to the Ontario County Humane Society, the investigation began shortly after midnight on June 19, when the new owner of a residence on Road 36 reported that a dog had been left behind inside the home.
Humane Society officers entered the residence and found a dog and two kittens living inside. Officials said the home had previously been condemned and deemed uninhabitable by the Town of Canadice Code Enforcement Office.
Investigators said the home’s floors were covered with animal feces, urine and rotting garbage. The animals reportedly had no food or water available. The three animals were seized and transported to the Ontario County Humane Society for evaluation.
Authorities identified the owner as Brett Kellar. According to the Humane Society, Kellar had previously been informed that he could no longer live at the residence. Officials said they were initially unable to locate him or reach him by phone.
Kellar was located on June 28 at his residence on Sunlight Lane in the Town of Geneva. He was charged with four counts of animal cruelty, four counts of failure to provide food and water to an impounded animal, and four counts of animal abandonment, all misdemeanors.
He was issued an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in Canadice Town Court at a later date. The animals have been surrendered to the Ontario County Humane Society and will be made available for adoption.
The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the investigation.
