A Canandaigua woman faces multiple charges, including child endangerment and resisting arrest, after police found an unsupervised toddler at a local park last month.

On May 11, officers with the Canandaigua Police Department responded to Jefferson Park following a welfare check complaint. Upon arrival, officers located an unsupervised 3-year-old child in the park without an adult. Investigators determined that the child was under the care of 40-year-old Rosemarie Escalera-Martinez, who was allegedly unaware that the toddler had left the home approximately an hour before being located by police.

When officers advised Escalera-Martinez that she was under arrest, she allegedly resisted their efforts to place her into custody. Authorities state she also refused to cooperate with officers during the booking and processing phase.

Escalera-Martinez was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, resisting arrest, and obstructing governmental administration. Following her arrest, she was transported to the Ontario County Jail to await arraignment.

The charges are accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. Police reports are automatically removed from this site after 90 days.
