An Auburn woman was taken into custody on Tuesday morning following an investigation into public assistance fraud.

Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck reports that Ashley Armstead, 32, was stopped by the Liverpool Police Department on June 23 and taken into custody on an outstanding arrest warrant. The warrant was issued by the Auburn City Court for Welfare Fraud in the Third Degree, Grand Larceny in the Third Degree, Offering a False Instrument for Filing, and Misuse of Food Stamps.

Armstead was turned over to deputies with the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office and transported for processing.

She was issued an appearance ticket per the request of the Auburn City Court Judge and is scheduled to appear in Auburn City Court at a later date.

The cases were investigated by members of the Cayuga County Department of Social Services Case Integrity Unit, with assistance from the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division and the Cayuga County District Attorney’s Office.

The charges are accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. Police reports are automatically removed from this site after 90 days.
