With the change from the Warriors to the Wolverines complete, the Weedsport Central School District is ready to auction off items related to its former mascot.
The district announced that it will auction off its remaining Warriors items, giving community members and alumni the chance to own a piece of school memorabilia.
“We wanted to give the community, who feel very passionately and pridefully about the history of the Warriors nickname, a fair chance to acquire some of these items,” said Weedsport Recreation Director Patrick Piascik.
Piascik is leading the initiative and is working with Auctions International to auction off the items. Auctions are expected to begin on Friday with the auction of Warriors rugs (pictured above). Once live, the auction will be hosted on the district website,
“The initial launch will feature various sizes of Warriors-branded rugs that were used throughout our buildings. From there, some of the next items will include vinyl chairs that were used for basketball and volleyball contests. Further down the line we will have things like sports jerseys.”
Piascik said the auction serves three purposes:
- Allows an equal opportunity for people to acquire these items, rather than it being first-come-first-serve.
- Generates some additional funds to go toward things that will ultimately benefit WCS students and improve our district. The replacement of these items was not aided by New York State, so these funds can help to offset some of those costs to some extent.
- Allows our alumni and community members a chance to have some of these pieces of history that there is a strong connection to.
A decision by the New York State Board of Regents required school districts using Native American symbols or imagery to change their mascots by the end of the 2024-2025 school year, forcing Weedsport to ditch its Warriors moniker, switching to the Wolverines.
