A former Geneva High School assistant principal has pleaded guilty to endangering the welfare of a child following an incident involving a student.
The Ontario County District Attorney’s Office said 51-year-old James Nuñez entered the plea during a July 7 court appearance. His trial had been scheduled to begin July 28.
Geneva Police alleged Nuñez subjected a student to inappropriate and unwanted physical contact at the school on November 18. According to a complaint filed in the case, Nuñez placed an arm around the student in what was described as a headlock and kissed the student on the cheek or neck. He allegedly followed the student down a hallway and put his arm around the student again.
Nuñez was arrested on December 2 and charged with endangering the welfare of a child and harassment.
The Geneva City School District previously said Nuñez was placed on administrative leave after officials learned of the allegations. He later resigned.
The District Attorney’s Office said Nuñez will remain under interim probation supervision for one year. If he does not complete that period, he will return to court for sentencing.
As part of the plea agreement, Nuñez must permanently surrender his New York state teaching certification.
