The Town of Geneva will help fund the City of Geneva’s Fourth of July fireworks celebration this year as the nation marks America’s 250th anniversary.

Geneva Town Supervisor Mark Venuti said the town board recently agreed to contribute toward the city’s planned fireworks display, citing the significance of the celebration.

“The town board agreed to contribute to the city of Geneva’s 250 year celebration, so we would help sponsor the fireworks display,” Venuti said during an appearance on FLX Morning.

Venuti said the town also received a separate funding request from the Geneva YMCA for its own July fireworks event, but officials decided supporting the city’s celebration was the more appropriate use of town funding.

“We didn’t think that we could do both, they’re only a week apart, and the one is that is a sort of a municipal celebration of the 250th anniversary,” Venuti said. “The town board thought that was a more appropriate for us to contribute to.”

This year’s Independence Day celebration is expected to draw large crowds across the region as communities mark the country’s semiquincentennial. Venuti noted the timing of the holiday, combined with other nearby communities not hosting fireworks displays, could further boost attendance in Geneva.

“Fireworks are a big draw,” Venuti said. “It’ll be exciting. They’re going to have a pretty good show.”

The contribution was discussed during the Town of Geneva’s most recent board meeting. Additional details about the fireworks event have not yet been announced.
