A Town of Lyons woman was arrested Wednesday afternoon by the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office following an investigation into welfare fraud.

Deputies arrested Tina Covert, 54, on charges of Misuse of Food Stamps and Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree. The arrest stems from a joint investigation conducted by the Wayne County Department of Social Services and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.

It is alleged that Covert allowed several other individuals to use her Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program EBT card to purchase food items without authorization to do so. The unauthorized transactions totaled $1,030.

Covert was transported to the Wayne County Jail for processing and subsequently released on an appearance ticket for Lyons Town Court.

Deputies were assisted in the investigation by the Wayne County Department of Social Services.

The charges are accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. Police reports are automatically removed from this site after 90 days.
