The Tompkins County Legislature has approved $50,000 in contingent funding to provide legal assistance to residents facing housing instability, displacement, or eviction-related issues.
County officials said the temporary program was created in response to urgent housing challenges in the community, including the recent evacuation order affecting portions of the Asteri apartment building in Ithaca after unsafe conditions were identified by the city’s fire marshal.
The funding will be used to support qualified legal service providers that offer legal advice and representation to eligible households dealing with housing-related legal matters.
Legislature Chair Shawna Black said lawmakers heard concerns from residents struggling to navigate difficult housing situations without understanding their legal rights or available protections.
“This program is intended to provide immediate legal support and help stabilize residents during a time of uncertainty,” Black said.
County officials said the initiative is designed to ensure residents have access to legal consultation and guidance as they face housing transitions and potential displacement. The funding is also intended to help legal service organizations meet increased demand for assistance.
Under the resolution approved by the Legislature, the County Administrator and County Attorney will establish a funding and contracting process, coordinate with legal assistance organizations, and distribute the funds as quickly as possible.
Legal service providers interested in participating in the program must apply by July 17.
