State Police have released the names of the two people involved in a drowning last week in Little Sodus Bay.
Thomas Kane, 70, of Sterling died after entering the water from a boat near Fair Haven on the afternoon of July 14. Karen Kane, 69, also of Sterling, entered the water in an attempt to help him and was rescued by a nearby boater.
Investigators said Thomas Kane went into the bay to cool off at approximately 3:30 p.m. High winds caused the boat to drift away, leaving him unable to return to it. He went underwater during the incident and did not resurface. A multi-agency search followed, and members of the New York State Police Underwater Recovery Team later located and recovered Kane’s body. The Cayuga County coroner responded to the scene.
The Fair Haven Volunteer Fire Department, Fair Haven Village Ambulance, Cayuga and Wayne County sheriff’s offices, U.S. Coast Guard, Ira Fire Department and Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office Air 1 assisted with the response.
State Police said the investigation remains ongoing.
