A longtime Cornell Cooperative Extension educator who began his career in Yates County has been selected for a statewide leadership position.
Cornell Cooperative Extension announced that Judson Reid has been named assistant director for agriculture and food systems. He succeeds Peter Landre, who retired in July.
In his new role, Reid will oversee 10 regional agriculture teams made up of more than 100 Cornell specialists. The teams work with farmers and food producers across New York in areas including dairy, livestock, field crops, commercial horticulture, vegetables, fruit, viticulture, urban agriculture and farm-to-institution programs.
The regional teams connect research from Cornell’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences with agricultural producers through on-farm diagnostics, applied research trials and business management assistance.
Reid began his Cornell Cooperative Extension career as a county extension agent in Yates County, where he worked directly with local growers and gained experience with county-level agricultural programs.
He later earned a master’s degree in plant protection with a focus on plant pathology and became an extension vegetable specialist with the Cornell Vegetable Program. His work has included high-tunnel and greenhouse production, small-farm operations, season-extension methods and collaboration with produce auctions across the state.
A Cornell College of Agriculture and Life Sciences graduate, Reid currently serves as CCE’s statewide Critical Issue Lead for agriculture and food systems programming. He also leads Harvest New York, an economic development program focused on local food supply chains, urban agriculture, community gardens, emerging crops and agricultural climate resiliency.
Reid will serve under CCE Associate Dean and Director Andy Turner.
