Women’s Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls will host a weeklong series of events starting later this week exploring the connections between women’s rights and the scientific world.

Suffrage & Science Week will take place April 17 through April 22, offering programs and activities for visitors of all ages in recognition of Earth Day.

The event will begin Friday, April 17, with a presentation titled “From Suffrage to STEM: The Erie Canal’s Impact on the Women’s Rights Movement.” The talk, led by Patrick Stenshorn of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, is scheduled for 1 to 1:45 p.m. in the park’s Guntzel Theater.

Organizers say the presentation will examine how the Erie Canal helped drive the 19th-century women’s suffrage movement by expanding social, political, and economic opportunities. It will also highlight how those changes opened pathways for women to engage in scientific and technical fields.

Additional activities throughout the week will include a ranger-led table talk titled “Science Beyond Spheres,” educational programming on Harriet Tubman as a master naturalist, and hands-on experiences such as sun printing and science-themed crafts. Some activities are weather-dependent.

All programs are free and open to the public during regular park hours, which run Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A full schedule of events is available on the National Park Service website.
