Two Bath residents are facing child endangerment charges after police say their home was found in extremely unsanitary condition during a visit by Child Protective Services.

The Bath Police Department announced Wednesday that 38-year-old Tyler Gilbert and 31-year-old Hailee Gilbert turned themselves in following an investigation that began on May 28.

According to police, officers responded to a home on Howell Street to assist Steuben County Child Protective Services with a home visit. When they arrived, investigators allegedly found the apartment in deplorable condition, with garbage and feces throughout the residence. Police said further investigation revealed that two children were living in the home. Authorities allege that furniture throughout the apartment, including the areas where the children slept, was covered in feces.

As a result of the findings, Bath Village Code Enforcement condemned the residence. A safety plan was also put in place for the children.

Tyler and Hailee Gilbert were each charged with two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child. After turning themselves in, the pair was arraigned in Bath Village Court and released on appearance tickets.

The charges are accusations, and both defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
