Juneteenth Celebrations in Auburn

A series of events will commemorate Juneteenth in the City of Auburn.

The Cayuga County Tourism Office said a series of events will take place throughout the city to commemorate Juneteenth, the federal holiday recognizing the end of slavery in the United States. The holiday, celebrated on June 19 in recognition of Major General Gordon Granger’s enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the Civil War, became a federal holiday in 2021.

Below is a list of events provided by the tourism office.

  • Thursday, June 18: What to the Slave is the Fourth of July? at Auburn Public Theater from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Friday, June 19: Harriet Tubman Walking Tour – The walk begins at the courtyard of the New York State Equal Rights Heritage Center, adjacent to the Harriet Tubman statue, and follows a route that includes Harriet Tubman National Historical Park, Fort Hill Cemetery, and Seward House Museum. The walk begins at 9:30 a.m.
  • Friday, June 19: Free tours at Seward House Museum from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Friday, June 19: Open house at Cayuga Museum of History and Art from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Saturday, June 20: as seen on America’s Got Talent – Womba Africa Drumming and Dance Group at Willard Memorial Chapel beginning at 6 p.m.
  • Saturday, June 20: Juneteenth Community Celebration and crowning of Miss Juneteenth at Booker T. Washington Community Center from noon to 5 p.m.
