Residents are invited to learn more about plans for a proposed Yates County Veterans Memorial Park during a community kickoff meeting next week in Penn Yan.

The Yates County Veterans Memorial Park, Inc., will host the meeting tonight at 6 p.m. at the Penn Yan Fire Department.

Organizers say the nonprofit has reached an agreement with the Village of Penn Yan to construct the Veterans Memorial Park at Lakeview Cemetery. Plans for the project include restoring the historic Abraham Wagener Memorial Chapel so it can once again serve as a functioning chapel while providing a place for reflection and remembrance.

The organization has partnered with Cornell University to help design the memorial park and is encouraging community members to provide input on the project’s design during the meeting.

Members of the Veterans Memorial Park board and representatives from Cornell will present an overview of the project and answer questions from the public.

“This project is about creating a permanent tribute where families and future generations can honor the bravery of those who served,” said Board President Herbie Snyder. “We’re calling on the community to help us bring this vision to life.”

The organization is seeking donations to help fund the park’s design, memorial installations, landscaping, and visitor amenities. Contributions may be mailed to Yates County Veterans Memorial Park, P.O. Box 133, Penn Yan, NY 14527.

Those interested in supporting the project or learning more can contact Douglas Gibbs at the Yates County Veterans Services Agency at 315-536-5196 or by email at [email protected].
