A 57-year-old woman remains in critical condition after being shot Wednesday afternoon in the City of Canandaigua.

The Canandaigua Police Department said officers were dispatched to a residence on Center Street at approximately 3 p.m. following a report of a person who had been shot. Upon arrival, officers found the victim inside her apartment suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso.

Police secured the scene and quickly obtained a description of the suspect and vehicle from witnesses who reported seeing the individual flee the area. The information was broadcast to neighboring law enforcement agencies.

A short time later, an Ontario County Sheriff’s deputy spotted the suspect vehicle entering the Town of Geneva on Routes 5 and 20. When the deputy attempted a traffic stop, the vehicle fled, leading authorities on a pursuit that entered the City of Geneva.

The pursuit involved the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police, and the Geneva Police Department. Authorities said the vehicle eventually crashed into a utility pole and a parked vehicle on Milton Street. The suspect then fled on foot but was apprehended a short distance from the crash scene. Investigators also recovered a loaded handgun from inside the vehicle.

Police identified the suspect as 50-year-old Spencer Wayne of Elmira. He was returned to the City of Canandaigua and charged with attempted murder and assault. Following processing, Wayne was transported to the Ontario County Jail pending arraignment in Canandaigua City Court.

The victim received emergency treatment at the scene from the Canandaigua Emergency Squad and the Canandaigua Fire Department before being airlifted by Mercy Flight to Strong Memorial Hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

The investigation remains ongoing, and police said additional charges are pending.
