Motorists traveling on State Route 228 in Schuyler County should expect delays this week as a pavement improvement project gets underway.

The New York State Department of Transportation announced that Route 228 will be reduced to a single lane between Perry City Road in Perry City and Hosenfeld Road in Alpine beginning Monday.Β Traffic will alternate through the work zone under the direction of flaggers daily from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The lane closures are expected to remain in effect through Friday, weather permitting.

Transportation officials are advising drivers to expect travel delays and to consider alternate routes if possible.

The work is part of a pavement improvement project along the route.

The Department of Transportation is also reminding motorists to slow down and use caution in work zones. Under New York law, fines are doubled for speeding in active work zones, and drivers convicted of two or more work zone speeding violations could face suspension of their driver’s license.
