Students and staff at Palmyra-Macedon Intermediate School recently celebrated a major achievement after being named a National Gold Star School by the National Association of Elementary School Principals.

The prestigious designation places the school among the nation’s top-performing elementary and middle-level schools. Out of more than 88,000 elementary schools across the United States, only 47 schools received the honor this year, placing PMI in the top half of one percent nationwide.

School leaders surprised students and staff with a red-carpet celebration last Wednesday to announce the recognition. The school’s gymnasium was transformed into a gala-style event dubbed the “PMI Schoolies,” complete with dramatic lighting, a custom balloon arch, professional-style photo opportunities, and an appearance by the Pal-Mac Red Raider mascot.

Addressing students during the ceremony, Principal Jenn Check praised the school community for earning the distinction.

“This is less than half of one percent and is an incredible honor,” Check said. “We are so, so very proud of you.”

The National Gold Star School program recognizes schools that demonstrate excellence in leadership, innovation, and student success.

As part of the selection process, PMI was evaluated using the NAESP’s “Three Pillars of the Principalship” framework: established culture, empowered people, and optimal systems. The criteria examine how schools engage students and families while supporting both academic achievement and emotional well-being.

According to the NAESP, the award highlights schools that create thriving learning communities through inclusive practices and a commitment to helping students succeed both inside and outside the classroom.

School officials said the recognition reflects the collective efforts of students, teachers, staff, and families who have helped build a strong and supportive learning environment at Palmyra-Macedon Intermediate School.
