The Yates County Celebrates America250 Committee has announced a pair of community events planned for Independence Day weekend as part of the nationwide commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The committee, made up of local historians and community leaders, has been working to honor Yates County’s Revolutionary War veterans while highlighting the nation’s upcoming semiquincentennial celebration.

The festivities begin Saturday, July 4, when the committee participates in the annual Branchport Fourth of July Parade. Beginning at 2 p.m., the committee’s sponsored floats will celebrate American history, patriotism, and 250 years of independence.

The celebration continues Sunday, July 5, with a countywide “Freedom in Faith” worship service at Rock Stream Presbyterian Church. The service will begin at 2 p.m. and is open to people of all faiths, families, and community members.

Following the service, attendees are invited to take part in a community ice cream social and family-friendly activities at the adjacent community house.

Organizers say the events are designed to bring residents together while recognizing the nation’s founding and the contributions of local Revolutionary War veterans.

Funding for the celebrations was provided through the New York State America250 Commission and the New York State Education Department.
