One person was taken to the hospital after a tractor-trailer collided with a pickup truck towing a camper early Tuesday morning on State Route 14 in the Town of Phelps.
According to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at approximately 1:15 a.m. to the area of 1282 State Route 14 for a reported personal injury crash. Just minutes later, the Oaks Corners Fire Department, Phelps Ambulance, and North Seneca Ambulance ALS were dispatched to the scene south of Cuddeback Road.
Investigators determined that 45-year-old Latavia Toussant of Shelburne, Vermont, was driving a 2025 GMC Sierra northbound while towing a 2019 Cherokee camper. Deputies said a northbound 2020 Freightliner tractor-trailer operated by 54-year-old Christopher Hardy of Union Springs struck the camper from behind.
The impact caused the tractor-trailer to then strike the GMC pickup, sending both vehicles off the roadway and into a nearby field.
Oaks Corners Fire Department Deputy Chief Zach Rey reported that the crash involved significant hazards and a large debris field from the damaged camper. Firefighters from Engine 3211 and Squad 3261 responded with a crew of nine personnel and assisted North Seneca Ambulance crews with patient care.
Toussant was transported by North Seneca Ambulance to Geneva General Hospital with complaints of neck pain. Hardy was evaluated at the scene and declined further medical treatment.
Firefighters worked to mitigate hazards involving the tractor-trailer, pickup truck, and camper while clearing debris from the roadway. Fire Police reduced Route 14 to a single lane of alternating traffic for approximately two hours as emergency crews worked at the scene.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the exact cause of the crash could not be determined, and no tickets were issued to either driver.
The Oaks Corners Fire Department thanked the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office, North Seneca Ambulance, and Ontario County 911 Center for their assistance. After emergency operations concluded, the scene was turned over to law enforcement and towing companies for further investigation and extensive cleanup. Empire Trucking removed the tractor-trailer, while JC Auto towed the pickup truck. Additional crews returned later Tuesday morning to remove debris from the damaged camper.
