The New York State Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation is conducting a preliminary assessment into the death of Adam Lafferty, the Wayne County man who died December 23 while incarcerated at Five Points Correctional Facility.
A spokesperson for AG Letitia James confirmed in an email to the Finger Lakes Times that the Office is beginning its inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Lafferty’s death. Family members told the Times that Lafferty suffered head and neck injuries.
In a letter written to a U.S. District Court Judge in Buffalo last October, Lafferty alleged ongoing abuse, denial of medical care, theft of personal belongings, and rights violations by both corrections officers and his cellmate.
The criminal investigation is being handled by the State Police and the Seneca County District Attorney’s Office.
