The legacy of a former Ontario County corrections officer continues to live on through one of the Sheriff’s Office’s four-legged members.
The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office recently shared that K-9 Shaver celebrated his third birthday with a visit to the family of Corrections Officer Joshua P. Shaver, the officer for whom the dog was named.
Officer Shaver served with the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office until his death in May 2017. Although nearly a decade has passed, the Sheriff’s Office said his dedication and service continue to be remembered by colleagues, friends and family.
During the visit, K-9 Shaver spent time with Officer Shaver’s children, providing what the Sheriff’s Office described as a meaningful reminder that their father’s legacy remains an important part of the department.
Handled by Corrections Officer Ryan Falkey, K-9 Shaver serves at the Ontario County Jail, where Officer Shaver also worked. The Sheriff’s Office said K-9 Shaver is the first narcotics detection dog assigned to the jail and plays an important role in helping maintain the safety and security of the facility.
The Sheriff’s Office said it remains grateful for Officer Shaver’s service and is proud to honor his memory through K-9 Shaver.
