For the first time in program history, the Hobart baseball team had two players named to the ABCA Regional All-Defensive Team. Junior first baseman Sean Garvin (Westwood/Westwood, Mass.) and senior second baseman Christian Petry (Phillips Exeter Academy/Plaistow, N.H.) were recognized for their superior play in the field.

“Both these guys put the work in with Vin and the rest of the infielders and deserve the recognition,” Hobart Head Coach Brad Cook said. “Christian has been a plus defensive second baseman for four years. I’m happy he’s got the hardware to show it. To do what Sean did is unheard of. To have 395 chances and not make an error, plus 26 assists, is next to none and should have earned a Gold Glove Award. He’s a major reason we finished fourth in the country in fielding percentage.”

Garvin started all 47 games at first base for the Statesmen without committing a single error. He broke the Hobart season records for fielding percentage, chances and putouts (369). Garvin was involved in 29 of Hobart’s 33 double plays this season.

Garvin also enjoyed a strong season at the plate, breaking the Statesmen season records for games played, games started, at-bats (181), hits (72), doubles (19), total bases (119) and runs scored (51). He had 24 multi-hit games and enjoyed a 20-game hitting streak. Garvin led the team with a .398 batting average, five triples and six home runs.

In three seasons, Garvin has a .990 fielding percentage on 946 chances. In 427 at-bats, he’s hitting .316 with 30 doubles, six triples and eight home runs. He has 94 RBIs and 94 runs scored.

Petry was a mainstay at second base throughout his four years on campus. He posted a career-high .979 fielding percentage this season, committing just four errors in 194 chances. Petry was second on the team with 112 assists and helped turn 18 of the team’s 33 double plays.

In 46 games this season, Petry hit .292 with a career-high 47 hits, seven doubles, a triple, 20 RBIs and 49 runs scored. He was second on the team with 15 stolen bases. Petry reached base safely in 30 consecutive games this season.

Across 145 career games, Petry compiled a .954 fielding percentage. He hit .286 in 504 at-bats, collecting 19 doubles and six triples. Fearless with a discerning eye, Petry had a .458 on-base percentage that was bolstered by 88 walks and 76 hit-by-pitches.

The Statesmen finished with a team fielding percentage of .979 this year. Hobart went 32-15, eclipsing the program record for wins in a season. The Statesmen were the runners-up in the Liberty League and made the program’s second NCAA Tournament appearance. Hobart earned its first two NCAA Tournament wins, defeating No. 14 Mount Union twice, 4-1 and 10-1, during the Salisbury Regional.
