An Ithaca police officer was bitten by a dog Wednesday while assisting during the removal of an unauthorized camping area on the city’s south side.

According to the Ithaca Police Department, officers were standing by as individuals dismantled and vacated the encampment when one of the people at the site was handling several dogs. Police said one of the dogs became aggressive, appearing to attack both the other dogs and its owner, who was yelling for help.  As an officer approached to assist, the dog charged and bit the officer. Officers used a Taser and pepper spray to stop the attack.

The injured officer was transported to a local hospital and is expected to recover.

Animal Control responded to the scene and took all of the dogs into custody.

Police did not release additional information about the animals or whether any charges are pending.
