Law enforcement agencies in Yates and Schuyler counties are urging boaters to use extreme caution across several Finger Lakes following last week’s rains.

The Yates County Sheriff’s Office says debris, including trees and limbs, has been washed into Seneca, Canandaigua, and Keuka lakes, creating hazardous conditions. Boaters are advised to remain alert for floating debris and reduce speeds while navigating.

Officials also report that water levels have risen significantly, with some areas seeing water extending over docks.

Meanwhile, the Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office is issuing a similar warning for Seneca, Cayuta, Lamoka, and Waneta lakes. Authorities say water levels have risen rapidly over the past 36 hours, bringing a significant amount of floating debris, including large logs, limbs, and other hazards that may not be immediately visible.

Boaters are urged to remain vigilant and use caution in all affected waterways.

Law enforcement also reminds boaters that under New York State Navigation Law, vessels must operate at no more than 5 miles per hour within 200 feet of shore. Officials note that hidden hazards are most likely to be found within that distance.

Authorities say conditions may remain unpredictable in the coming days.
