Joshua Smith of Newark has been named the new director of professional practice for Thompson Health’s Department of Nursing.

In this role, Smith will be responsible for advancing nursing excellence, ensuring high quality patient care, and fostering continuous improvement. He will lead initiatives related to Thompson’s Magnet recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), nursing quality programs, and professional development.

Smith holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice from Rush University in Chicago and a Master of Science in Nursing Leadership and Administration from Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester. He is certified as a Critical Care Registered Nurse, has ANCC Nurse Executive Advanced board certification, and is designated by the National Association for Healthcare Quality as a Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality.

Most recently, Smith served as the vice president of Nursing Quality, Safety, and Patient Experience for Rochester Regional Health.

“Joshua has a proven track record of leading successful quality improvement projects including initiatives focused on patient mobility, Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems responsiveness scores, hospital-acquired pressure injury reduction, and the evidence-based guide for clinicians to coordinate multidisciplinary patient care in the intensive care unit,” said Thompson Health Vice President of Patient Care Services/Chief Nursing Officer Hazel Robertshaw. “We are confident his expertise in professional practice standards, quality initiatives, and leadership will greatly benefit our commitment to patient care excellence and staff development.”
