Dorothy H. Callahan

AUBURN | Dorothy H. Callahan, 82, of Grove Avenue, Auburn, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012, at her home. Dorothy was born in Auburn, the daughter of the late Stephen W. and Eva (Pesarchick) Herbert and resided there all of her life. A communicant of Saint Mary's Church and Saints Peter and Paul Church, Dorothy attended Auburn schools, graduating from East High School in 1948. She was a minister of the craft of taking care of others from her early years, working on the Pesarchick family farm, caring for her family and extended family, creating homemade specialties (including chocolate cake and potato salad), performing housekeeping chores and personal care. Oversight of her three grandchildren brought special delight to her life. She was an avid and devoted sports fan, starting with her son's youth baseball teams and through her grandchildren's football, baseball, softball and basketball games. She especially enjoyed traveling to attend Williams and Brown football games and St. Lawrence parent and grandparent events and CBA. Dorothy's Ukrainian heritage was precious to her and she shared it generously, preparing traditional holiday fare at Christmas and Easter, just as her mother and grandmother had done before her. Surviving are one son, John H. Callahan and his wife, Patricia, of Syracuse; one brother, Theodore S. Herbert, of Auburn; one sister, Joan B. Short (Thomas), of Auburn; three grandchildren, Jeffrey Herbert Callahan, of Boston, Mark Francis Callahan, of Boston and Amy Elisabeth Callahan, of Syracuse. In addition to her parents, Dorothy Callahan was predeceased by her husband, John E. Callahan, who died in 2000 and her brother, Walter D. Silensky. “Mrs. Kitty has reunited with her beloved “Hoot, with her parents and many of the family members she cared for, loved deeply, and missed dearly. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at Brew Funeral Home, 48 South St., Auburn. Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial, which will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27 at St. Mary's Church, 15 Clark St., Auburn. Interment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, of Auburn. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Saints Peter and Paul School Memorial Fund, 130 Washington St., Auburn, N.Y. 13021, in memory of Dorothy Callahan.
