Stepping outside right now, the air still carries that heavy, baked-pavement feel — Geneva is sitting at 88° at 6 PM, and we haven’t seen much relief since the afternoon peak. Tonight won’t offer much of a break either. Lows will only drop to the mid 60s, staying unusually warm as the high-pressure dome that’s been parked over the Great Lakes holds its grip.
NWS Buffalo and NWS Binghamton both have Heat Advisories covering every county across the Finger Lakes through Tuesday at 8:00 PM, and the reasoning is worth taking seriously. That high-pressure dome is continuing to expand, pushing 850-millibar temperatures into the 99th percentile for mid-July. Dewpoints climb into the low 70s Tuesday as a low-level jet advects a surge of Gulf moisture northward — heat indices are expected to reach the low 100s across the Finger Lakes, with the possibility of 105° in some spots.
Tuesday highs will be extreme: Geneva and Canandaigua could reach the mid-to-upper 90s, with Ithaca potentially touching 96°. Wind gusts of 25 to 40 mph are also possible under that same jet — no cooling comfort there. Keep vulnerable people, kids, and pets out of the heat during peak hours, roughly 11 AM through 8 PM.
Relief arrives Wednesday, when a surface cold front dropping south out of eastern Canada will usher in cooler and drier air. Highs fall back into the upper 80s Wednesday and mid 80s by Thursday, with the pattern becoming more unsettled late in the week — some drizzle and shower chances arrive by Friday and carry into the weekend.
