Heat Advisory Covers the Region Through Tuesday Evening

The heat building into Tuesday has me watching the clock on this one — both NWS Buffalo and NWS Binghamton have Heat Advisories covering every corner of the Finger Lakes, running through Tuesday at 8:00 PM. Today is warm but survivable: Geneva is sitting at 83° at noon, still a few degrees short of the forecast high of 89°, and humidity remains in check enough that heat indices should stay in the mid-to-upper 80s this afternoon. Canandaigua and Penn Yan are already at 84°, and Ithaca and Watkins Glen are leading the pack at 86°.

Tuesday is the concern. A massive high-pressure dome centered over the upper Mississippi Valley — NWS Buffalo notes the 850mb temperatures will reach the 99th percentile for mid-July — pushes humidity sharply higher overnight, and that combination drives heat indices into the mid-to-upper 90s regionwide, with low 100s possible. Highs in the low-to-mid 90s are likely, potentially approaching record territory. Wednesday cools slightly to near 89° before a gradual slide toward the low 80s by week’s end, with light drizzle chances arriving Friday into the weekend.
