Extreme Heat Warning Covers All Nine Towns Through Friday

Stepping outside right now feels like walking into a wall — Geneva is sitting at 91° with light drizzle at 6 PM, and Watkins Glen just hit 95° with an active thunderstorm. The heat wave gripping the Finger Lakes is no ordinary midsummer warm spell, and NWS Buffalo and Binghamton agree: Extreme Heat Warnings blanket every county in our coverage area through Friday at 8 PM.

Tonight offers little relief. Lows will only drop to the low-to-mid 70s across the region — 70° in Geneva, 75° in Ithaca — meaning overnight is more like a humid July afternoon than a cooling break. An upper-level ridge is strengthening over the eastern U.S., keeping 850-millibar temperatures above the critical threshold through Thursday. There is no meaningful cooldown coming before the weekend.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, is the peak. Geneva climbs to 96°, and with humidity still elevated, heat index values will push well into the triple digits through the afternoon. Stay hydrated, check on neighbors, and limit time outdoors during peak heating hours — roughly 11 AM through 6 PM. A scattered thunderstorm or two remains possible Wednesday evening, similar to today’s setup, but don’t count on those storms to break the heat pattern.

Independence Day Saturday looks like the region’s best shot at some relief — highs fall to around 86° in Geneva with a 51% chance of showers and thunderstorms. Fireworks plans carry real uncertainty that evening. Sunday and Monday both sit near 85°, still warm but a noticeable step down from this brutal midweek stretch.
