A fine afternoon gives way to unsettled days ahead

The afternoon radar is quiet and the afternoon looks to stay that way — 73° in Geneva right now under mainly clear skies, with a light northwest breeze keeping humidity in the mid-50s. The day is tracking smoothly toward a high near 76°, and there’s nothing to flag on the alert board.

The change comes Thursday. A warm frontal passage Thursday morning is expected to move a blanket of cloud cover and embedded showers across the region, and NWS Buffalo notes that morning cloud cover could limit afternoon instability ahead of a cold frontal passage Thursday evening. Still, a marginal risk for severe thunderstorms exists for the western Southern Tier Thursday — Corning and the surrounding valleys should watch that timing. Friday brings light drizzle, then the pattern gradually dries heading into the weekend. By Sunday, highs push toward 87°, and a heat surge looks possible by Tuesday of next week with readings near 91°.
