Weather forecast for the Finger Lakes: Cold Front Brings Showers Tonight, Cooler Weekend Ahead

A westerly breeze at 59°F and mainly clear skies greet the Finger Lakes this Friday morning — but don’t let that opening act fool you. The calm won’t last long once afternoon heating kicks in and a shortwave trough pushes through from the west.

Conditions start pleasant enough, with highs reaching the low-to-mid 70s regionwide by early afternoon. Geneva tops out near 72°, while Ithaca and Watkins Glen push toward 76°. The story, though, is the wind. A tight pressure gradient left behind by Thursday’s departing low will keep west-southwest gusts in the 25-to-30 mph range through the afternoon hours, with gusts closer to 35 mph possible near and east of Lake Ontario — that’s the I-90 corridor, including Auburn. The Beach Hazards Statement in effect through noon today for Lake Ontario shores reflects those choppy, hazardous surf conditions.

Showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected to develop between roughly 1 PM and 6 PM, with the best coverage along that same I-90 corridor. By evening, the trough passes and winds begin to relax. Overnight lows settle near 58°, skies partially clear, and conditions quiet considerably.

Into the weekend, expect a lingering unsettled pattern. Saturday and Sunday bring scattered showers and isolated storms, though nothing appears organized or severe at this stage. The more notable rain threat arrives Sunday night into Monday, when a fresh system increases coverage significantly — Monday shows an 80% precipitation chance in Geneva with a high of only 69°. A brief drier window opens mid-to-late next week, with highs returning to the mid-70s by Wednesday and Thursday before another chance of showers on the 25th.
