A man was detained Thursday after Rochester police said a Facebook Marketplace transaction turned into an armed robbery.
According to the Rochester Police Department, officers responded to Saint Stanislaus Street at approximately 4 p.m. after receiving a report of a robbery involving a motorcycle sale arranged through Facebook Marketplace.
Police said a person attempting to purchase a motorcycle advertised online was robbed at gunpoint during the transaction. Authorities detained a suspect following the incident, though charges had not been filed as of Friday morning.
The investigation remains active, and police said additional information will be released as it becomes available.
The incident is the latest in a series of crimes linked to online marketplace transactions across the region. Law enforcement agencies have repeatedly warned buyers and sellers to take precautions when meeting strangers to complete sales arranged through social media platforms.
Earlier this year, Ontario County authorities investigated a Facebook Marketplace vehicle scam involving the sale of cars at unusually low prices. In a separate case, Irondequoit Police highlighted the risks associated with online marketplace transactions after a man was robbed while attempting to purchase a vehicle.
Many police departments now offer designated e-commerce exchange zones at police stations where buyers and sellers can safely complete transactions under surveillance.
