The state DEC has received notifications from several regulated solid waste management facilities warning of an internet phishing scam.

Facilities are receiving emails with detailed information about their registration and permit, asking them to click a link and report personal information or their permit/registration will be revoked. The state agency said it did not send this notification and urges those who receive it to not click the link or offer the sender any personal information.

Indicators you can look for in potential phishing emails and avoid these types of internet scams:

  • Check the email address—State email addresses end in “.ny.gov.”
  • Watch out for unprofessional references like “GOV” instead of “Government.”
  • Grammatical errors can be a sign of a phishing attempt.
  • Before clicking on a link, hover your cursor over it to see where the link will take you.
