The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is looking for volunteers to help monitor wildlife across the state through its Snapshot NY community science program.
The initiative uses trail cameras placed on private and public lands to collect photos of wildlife, helping DEC biologists improve the management and conservation of more than a dozen animal species.
To participate, volunteers need access to land where they can place a trail camera. While private property is preferred, participants may also obtain permission to install cameras on nearby public lands. Volunteers are encouraged to use their own trail cameras, though a limited number of loaner cameras are available for participants in the Adirondack region. Participants must also have internet access to upload photos collected during the survey.
Anyone interested in volunteering can create an account through the Snapshot NY program and select a survey block where they would like to deploy a camera.
DEC officials say the project provides valuable data while allowing New Yorkers to contribute directly to wildlife research and conservation efforts.
