A woman serving a 28-year prison sentence for her role in a double murder in Sodus will return to Wayne County Court this week.
According to the Wayne County District Attorney’s Office, Charlene Childers has applied to be resentenced under New York’s Domestic Violence Survivors Justice Act. Court proceedings are scheduled to begin Friday, although prosecutors said a decision is not expected this week.
Childers pleaded guilty to manslaughter after admitting she helped plan the 2018 killing of Josh Niles, the father of two of her children.
Niles and his fiancée, Amber Washburn, were shot and killed outside their home in Sodus.
Childers’ husband, Tim Dean, carried out the shootings. Dean, a former police chief in Sunray, Texas, is serving life in prison without the possibility of parole.
New York’s Domestic Violence Survivors Justice Act allows judges to impose reduced sentences in certain cases involving defendants whose abuse contributed significantly to their criminal conduct.
