Two teenagers have been charged after New York State Police investigated a fire and burglary at the former Butler Correctional Facility in Wayne County.
Troopers said they responded to the abandoned facility on Westbury Cutoff Road in the Town of Butler at approximately 4:04 p.m. on June 3 after receiving reports that two individuals had entered the property and started fires inside one of the buildings.
According to State Police, the investigation determined that an 18-year-old and a 17-year-old unlawfully entered a maintenance building on the property. While inside, the pair allegedly started multiple fires using paper and cardboard and spray-painted graffiti throughout the building.
Members of the Red Creek Fire Department responded and extinguished several active fires, preventing additional damage to the structure.
The 18-year-old was charged with third-degree burglary, a felony; fourth-degree arson, a felony; and fourth-degree criminal mischief, a misdemeanor. State Police said the individual was processed at the State Police barracks in Wolcott and arraigned in Wayne County Centralized Arraignment Court.
