The Newark Police Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying a man suspected of stealing a wallet and attempting to make unauthorized purchases with the victim’s financial information.
According to police, the incident occurred on June 4 at approximately 5:20 p.m. at the Dollar General store on West Miller Street. Investigators said the victim accidentally dropped a wallet while shopping at the store.
Police allege a man picked up the wallet and left with it instead of attempting to return it. Shortly afterward, the victim began receiving text message notifications from various online vendors indicating someone was attempting to make purchases using information associated with the wallet.
The suspect was described as wearing a white shirt, blue shorts, and a black durag. Police said he was seen leaving the area in a white four-door Honda. Investigators also said the individual may go by the name or nickname “Dinero Cruz” or “Dinero Cruise.”
Authorities noted that surveillance images obtained from the store are of limited quality, but are hopeful someone may recognize the individual.
