Two paddleboarders were safely rescued from Seneca Lake after becoming stranded in high winds on Thursday.

The Yates County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol was activated after receiving a report that two individuals on paddleboards were in the middle of the lake and unable to return to shore due to strong winds associated with a wind advisory in effect for the region.

Marine Patrol officers responded and successfully located and rescued both individuals. Authorities said neither person was injured.

The rescue operation was conducted with assistance from personnel at the U.S. Naval Facility near Dresden.

Following the incident, the Yates County Sheriff’s Office reminded boaters and paddlers to check weather conditions before heading onto local waterways, regardless of the size or type of watercraft being used.

Officials noted that changing weather patterns and increasing wind speeds can quickly create dangerous conditions on area lakes, leaving even experienced paddlers and boaters in hazardous situations.
