A Democratic candidate for Congress in New York’s 23rd District has submitted nominating petitions ahead of the filing deadline.

Aaron Gies filed more than 8,000 signatures with the State Board of Elections, well above the 1,250 required to appear on the ballot. He is the first challenger to file petitions in the district, which is currently represented by Congressman Nick Langworthy.

Gies’ campaign said more than 400 volunteers helped collect signatures across all nine counties in the district, which spans more than 6,000 square miles across Western New York and the Southern Tier.Β  The district includes portions of Steuben and Schuyler counties.

β€œThis extraordinary response speaks volumes about the energy behind our campaign and the faith that people in the District have in what we’re building together,” said Gies. β€œI’m profoundly grateful for the tireless dedication of our volunteers, the steadfast backing of our supporters, and the spirit of our community that helped us reach this milestone. Our shared commitment to an affordable good life rooted in reigniting the common good is what drives this movement.”

The filing deadline for petitions is Apr. 6.
