Construction of Micron’s planned semiconductor manufacturing campus in Clay reached a major milestone Thursday as workers poured the first building foundations at the site.
The milestone comes less than six months after groundbreaking and marks the transition from site preparation to vertical construction on what state officials describe as the largest private-sector construction project in New York history.
Governor Kathy Hochul said the project is progressing ahead of schedule and represents another significant step in bringing advanced semiconductor manufacturing to the state.
“Today’s milestone marks another major step for Micron in Central New York, and what makes it even more remarkable is that we’re here in July — months ahead of schedule — pouring the concrete foundation,” Hochul said.
Micron announced earlier this year that it is increasing its planned U.S. investments to more than $250 billion through 2035, with the Central New York campus serving as a cornerstone of its domestic manufacturing strategy.
Company President and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said reaching the foundation stage ahead of schedule reflects the coordination between the company, government agencies, contractors, labor organizations, and local partners.
Once completed, the Central New York campus is expected to become the largest semiconductor manufacturing facility in the United States.
State officials estimate the project and its supply chain will support approximately 50,000 jobs, including thousands of construction positions and permanent manufacturing and technology careers.
The development is expected to play a key role in expanding domestic semiconductor production and strengthening the nation’s supply chain while establishing Upstate New York as a major hub for advanced chip manufacturing.
