Memorial Patio Project Aims To Honor Veterans In Ovid

A longtime veterans organization in Ovid is working to create a new space to honor service members while improving its presence in the community.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6200 is planning a Veterans Memorial Patio at its post along Route 96, featuring engraved bricks, a new flagpole, and space for reflection.

Quartermaster Kenny Fellers said the post, which has been part of the community since 1948, is made up of combat veterans, along with an auxiliary open to eligible family members.

“We’ve been wanting to do kind of a memorial, you know, Veterans Memorial, something for a long time,” Fellers said. “All of these needs and wants just kind of came together at one time.”

The project will center around a newly installed 25-foot flagpole and include a patio constructed from donated, laser-engraved bricks. Community members can purchase the bricks and customize them with names, messages, and military or patriotic logos.

Fellers said the goal is to create a lasting tribute for veterans and their families while also enhancing the appearance of the property.

“It’ll be a place for veterans to go and sit and see their family members names for generations,” he said.

The post has already received some early interest, primarily from members, but leaders hope to expand outreach to the broader community.

Orders for the bricks will be accepted through July 4, with construction expected to begin later in the summer. Fellers said the patio should be completed by early fall, with a formal dedication planned for Veterans Day.

“We want people in the village to know they’re welcome,” he said. “If they have a family member that’s in the patio, they can always come and visit whenever they want.”

More information about the project, including how to purchase a commemorative brick, is available on the post’s website.
