The National Weather Service has confirmed that a tornado touched down near Rock Stream in Yates County during Thursday’s severe weather outbreak.
A storm survey team from the National Weather Service office in Binghamton examined storm damage in the area on Friday and determined that a tornado was responsible for at least some of the destruction.
Meteorologists said the survey is still underway, and additional details, including the tornado’s EF-scale rating, path length, peak wind speeds, and other information, will be released later in a formal public information statement.
Thursday’s powerful storms brought damaging winds, heavy rain and widespread power outages across portions of the Finger Lakes, Central New York, and Southern Tier.
