A Monroe County man is facing felony charges after authorities say he intentionally set a fire inside a Walmart store in Greece.

According to the Greece Police Department, officers responded to the Walmart at 3800 Dewey Avenue at approximately 11 a.m. on July 2 following reports of a fire inside the store.

Before emergency crews arrived, store employees were able to extinguish the fire. The building was evacuated as a precaution, and responding officers located a man matching the suspect’s description outside the store. He was taken into custody without incident.  Following an investigation that included collecting evidence, reviewing surveillance video, and conducting interviews, police determined the fire had been intentionally set.

Jamel Wright, of Greece, was arrested and charged with second-degree arson, first-degree reckless endangerment, and second-degree criminal mischief, all felony offenses.

He was transported to Greece Police Headquarters for processing before being taken to the Monroe County Jail to await arraignment.

No injuries were reported, although police said the fire and efforts to extinguish it caused damage inside the store.
