An inmate died Sunday after being found unresponsive inside the Oneida County Correctional Facility, prompting multiple investigations into the incident.
According to Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol, corrections officers discovered the man unresponsive in his cell on Sunday and immediately activated the facility’s emergency medical response protocol.
Medical staff at the jail began lifesaving efforts while the Oriskany Fire Department and C.O.C.V.A.C. Ambulance were dispatched to the facility. The inmate was transported to Wynn Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The man’s identity has not been released pending notification of his next of kin.
Because of the nature of the incident, the Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office responded to both the correctional facility and the hospital as part of the investigation.
Sheriff Maciol said the Sheriff’s Office is conducting a full investigation into the death. The incident will also be independently reviewed by the New York State Commission of Corrections and the New York State Attorney General’s Office.
Under New York law, the Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigations is required to investigate the death of any person while in the custody of a police or peace officer anywhere in the state.
Officials said additional information will be released as the investigation continues.
