An Ithaca police officer suffered injuries on Wednesday afternoon while responding to a large fight on the Ithaca Commons.

Officers were dispatched to the 100 block of West State Street around 2:40 p.m. following reports of several individuals fighting. Upon arrival, police located two people actively engaged in a physical dispute, surrounded by a crowd of onlookers who were yelling and inciting the confrontation.

While officers intervened to separate the parties and gain control of the disturbance, one officer sustained minor injuries from an individual who was actively fighting.

A juvenile was identified as the provoking party in the dispute and was arrested. The youth faces charges of Obstruction of Governmental Administration in the Second Degree and Resisting Arrest, both of which are class A misdemeanors.

Due to the suspect’s age, police are not releasing any further information regarding their identity.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
