The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office has identified the incarcerated individual who died Sunday at the Oneida County Correctional Facility as 46-year-old Adam Mason of Rome.
According to Sheriff Robert Maciol, corrections officers found Mason unresponsive in his cell on Sunday and immediately activated the facility’s emergency medical response protocol.
Medical staff at the jail began life-saving efforts while the Oriskany Fire Department and Central Oneida County Volunteer Ambulance Corps (C.O.C.V.A.C.) responded to the facility. Mason was transported to Wynn Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office has completed an autopsy, but the official cause and manner of death are still pending.
The Sheriff’s Office said its investigation into the death remains ongoing.
As required under New York law, the death is also being independently investigated by the New York State Commission of Correction and the Office of Special Investigation within the New York State Attorney General’s Office. The Attorney General’s Office is required to investigate the death of any person who dies while in the custody of a police or peace officer anywhere in New York State.
Authorities have not released any additional information about the circumstances surrounding Mason’s death.
