A 7-year-old child suffered critical injuries Saturday evening in a boating accident on Canandaigua Lake, according to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to the Lake House in the City of Canandaigua at approximately 5:30 p.m. for a reported boating injury that occurred about a mile offshore.
Investigators said the child was riding on a pontoon boat with family members when a large wave propelled him out of the moving vessel. The child landed in the water between the boat’s two pontoons and was struck by the propeller, resulting in a severe leg laceration.
Adults on board, including the child’s father, jumped into the water and were able to retrieve him and bring him back onto the boat before returning to shore.
Once ashore, deputies, personnel from Canandaigua Emergency Medical Services and civilians worked to stabilize the child. He was then transported by Mercy Flight to Strong Memorial Hospital for treatment.
The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident. Canandaigua EMS and Mercy Flight assisted at the scene.
