A fallen piece of charcoal from a recently used grill caused a deck fire at a lake house in the Town of Richmond on Saturday evening, according to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies and firefighters responded to a residence on East Lake Road at approximately 7:02 p.m. after receiving reports of a fire.

Investigators determined the fire originated near a charcoal grill on the northwest corner of the deck. Authorities said a hot piece of charcoal fell from the grill while no one was home, igniting materials on the deck and causing heavy damage.

The first deputy to arrive used a fire extinguisher and worked alongside the first Richmond firefighter on scene, who used a garden hose to extinguish the blaze.

Officials said the fire was contained to the deck and did not spread to the house. The homeowner was later notified of the incident.

The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office investigated the fire with assistance from the Richmond Fire Department.
